About Me

My photo
There are three things that I am passionate about; my family, my career and continuous learning. Luckily, the last two go hand in hand. This blog will inform its guests about some of the things I have encountered as an ABE instructor.

  1. Cute comic! People do have such a hard time distinguishing between adverbs and adjectives. I think it's the way in which parts of speech are taught in K-12! You learn all about adjectives, then you learn all about adverbs, and I think a connection is not made clear. Teaching that adjectives modify nouns and that adverbs modify verbs and make adjectives stronger doesn't seem to do the trick for my adult learners. I teach them that if they know a word and that same word with an -ly ending, the first is probably an adjective and the second an adverb. I tell them that any time you want to tell how something is done, you need an adverb--carefully, quickly, etc.--or if you want to make an adjective stronger--not just great, but really great! They seem to understand that explanation much better.
